The first GUINNESS® research laboratory is established under the chemist Alexander Forbes-Watson, later followed by an experimental Brewhouse and Experimental Maltings.
There are 3,240 employees at the brewery. About 10,000 people are dependent on the GUINNESS® brewery for their livelihood - 1 in 30 of the population of Dublin.
Burke’s, the largest bottler of GUINNESS®, begins bottling in the USA. They arrange for sky signs to be erected on Broadway at a cost of $1400 per year.
Seigal Cooper, the world’s largest grocery firm starts to bottle GUINNESS® in the USA and advertises widely.
GUINNESS® purchase their first steamship, the W.M. Barkley. In 1917 she is torpedoed seven miles east of the Kish lightship and sinks.
35,000 to North America, 35,000 to Australia, with South Africa the 3rd biggest market. Exports represented 5% of all Guinness sold.
Rupert Guinness takes over as Chairman of the Company.
First ever advertisement for GUINNESS® with the slogan “Guinness is Good For You” is published in the British national press. This was soon followed by advertisements featuring the cartoon characters created by John Gilroy. His famous series of posters of the distraught zookeeper and his mischievous animals carried the line 'My Goodness, My Guinness’.
The S.S Guinness steamship is launched. It is the first to be custom built to transport GUINNESS® beer.
The first GUINNESS® brewery overseas is built at Park Royal, London. William Sealy Gosset, the father of modern statistics, is appointed Head Brewer.
Guinness sends all British troops in the British Expeditionary Force in France a bottle of GUINNESS “to enjoy with their Christmas dinner.”
Exports continue on a limited basis despite the war, until a total ban on exports in June 1944. The ban holds until July 1947.
The brewery is gradually converted to Sterile Plant, moving production from wooden to metal vessels.
Export Bottlers Ltd in Liverpool is destroyed by bombing. The factory is hastily rebuilt, and the patched up factory continues operating until 1957.
Guinness Nigeria is set up to import and market GUINNESS® in Nigeria. Nigeria is already a big market and discussions take place to consider putting a bottling line there.
