Marketing and preserving traditional community batik
Marketing and preserving traditional community batik
Lasem batik is one of Indonesia's most famous batik styles. Once a national icon, the batik community in Lasem, Central Java has been faced with deteriorating conditions since 1997. The Indonesian Pluralism Institute (IPI) realised that the community needed economic empowerment and industrial support to restore Lasem batik to its former glory.
Working in partnership with the Srikandi Jeruk Batik Artisans Community, the IPI plans to establish a Centre for Community Batik Marketing, which will provide a physical marketplace for traders and serve as a forum for e-trading. The centre will also establish a database of specific Lasem batik motifs.
This enterprise will improve the batik artisan community economy and develop the community's skills in management and entrepreneurship, creating a business model for the promotion of culture and the preservation of Lasem batik culture.
