Many Indonesian women are being held back by traditional expectations, causing them to lose their confidence. In turn their status in society is reinforced by low incomes, which push girls to get married at an increasingly younger age.
Ibu Noor had been making handmade products from recycled textile factory fabric for a few years on her own. As she looked to expand her team however, she discovered an even greater opportunity. Ibu has established Pelangi Nusantara, whose mission is to not only grow her initial business, but more importantly to empower the women of the local community by providing them with employment, a regular income of their own and opportunities for self-development.
Goals and objectives
The cooperative is also collaborating with universities in the Malang area to teach women about management, technology, and marketing. There are even plans to develop a program for tourists. Through Pelangi Nusantara this community is rebuilding itself with a newfound source of power, its women.
