Goals and objectives

The goal of this project is to create a market for inexpensive water filters in Ghana and Nigeria by demonstrating that they are a cost-effective solution to the water quality problem faced by many low-income consumers in both countries. This project will demonstrate that the CrystalPur™ water filter, in particular, meets consumer needs and can be distributed profitably by the local private sector. The long-term goal is to assist the local private sector in establishing an independent and growing supply chain for water filters that is making a significant contribution to the reduction of waterborne diseases in both countries.

Expected goals and objectives

30,000 filters were marketed during this 15-month project, providing clean water to 250,000 low income individuals. Health impacts surveys of families that use the filter verify a reduction in the incidence rate of waterborne diseases and cost-savings in terms of medical expenses and increased productivity. A sustainable and affordable point-of-use water treatment option is available that makes contaminated water safe to drink at a cost of one-tenth to one-fifth of a US cent per litre. Private and public institutions are aware of this filter and of the potential of point-of-use water treatment technologies for water quality.

Targeting waterborne disease in Ghana and Nigeria

The Water Filter Enterprise programme aims to build a sustainable market for affordable household CrystalPur™ water filters to reduce waterborne disease amongst 250,000 people in Ghana and Nigeria. The programme will increase the entrepreneurial and training skills for thousands more, leading to higher incomes and healthier populations. The programme partners with EnterpriseWorks (EW), a division of Relief International (RI), a not-for-profit organisation. EW will support local entrepreneurs in the distribution and retail sales of the water filters, as well as develop local campaigns to educate on the benefits of clean water and hygiene.
