Due to a lack of proper sports facilities and recreational activities for young adults in St Anne,
Jamaica, the community’s younger generations have little opportunity or resource to improve their sporting prospects.
Vernon Williams is the head of the Rio Hoe Community Club in St. Ann. He works tirelessly to upgrade the Rio Hoe Community Centre, having originally lobbied the government and ALCAN for land. Now the Rio Hoe Community Centre is a top class facility that benefits the community on a broad scale by providing a range of recreational activities.
The centre is also able to generate its own revenue by renting its facilities to schools for sports days, for parish cricket matches and family reunions.
Goals and objectives
In particular the centre puts a great emphasis on developing sports facilities for the younger members of the community.
Improvements have now been made to the centre which includes electricity, water, a football field and a netball court.
