Environmental awareness in Jamaica is very low, and a well-structured and sustained recycling system has not
yet been established to protect the island from hazardous waste.
Island Cycle aims to significantly reduce the volume of hazardous waste in the region, change Jamaican society’s attitude towards recycling
and encourage people, especially young adults, to be more environmentally friendly. Leanne has introduced cage bins to the island,
which act as collection points for recyclable materials, and is encouraging schools to get involved through a competition
that encourages them to compete against one another to see which can collect the most plastic bottles.
Goals and objectives
Whilst Island Cycle has started in Jamaica; Leanne wants to expand across the Caribbean region. Eventually, rather than selling the collected materials to overseas manufacturers,
she aims to open a plant in the Caribbean where the recycled materials can be used to produce new products.
