ARTHUR'S DAY

The line up for Arthur's Day is growing by the day, with more artists being announced on a regular basis.

Aloe Blacc

Aloe Blacc - singer, writer, musician, thinker and all-round independent talent - calls things like he sees them, and he doesn't like what he sees. You can hear it in his music, feel it in his lyrics and watch it do its thing on stage. "My purpose for music is positive social change," says this ambitious Orange County Californian. Aloe doesn't claim to have the answers, but he sure knows how to ask the right questions. His sophomore album, 'Good Things', is a political yet deeply personal record: part classic, contemporary Soul, part understated Hip Hop, and with just the right amount of Funk, it is held together by Blacc's gorgeous, effortlessly cool delivery.

A Plastic Rose

top

A Plastic Rose are the cross-community-cross-border stars of the future. This 4-piece were formed when bassist Troy and drummer Dave answered an emergency call from other members Gerry (guitar/vox) and Ian (guitar/vox) following unsuccessful attempts to kidnap members from other local bands. They deliver their "nu-wave-disco-grunge-old-skool-emo" with a passion and intensity forged by their apprenticeship of gigging anytime, anywhere, with and to anyone, a philosophy that has led to them sharing stages with acts as diverse as Frank Turner and Explosions In The Sky. They became the first ever unsigned band to be play-listed on BBC Radio 1.

Ash

With a career spanning 18 years, and 18 Top 40 hits, Irish rock group Ash have lost none of the energy that saw them debut on Top Of The Pops whilst awaiting their 'A' level results and since notch up 5 studio albums together. Heralded as 'the ultimate singles band' the 3-piece turned their back on the traditional route of recording an album every couple of years and set up their own studio and label, Atomic Heart Records. This newfound freedom enabled the band to record and release songs at will. In June 2011, Ash announced a second Greatest Hits record in the works.

The night before they were due to fly they bumped into Alex Cox at a three am Hackney house party and press ganged him into joining them on their trip.

Since then they have spent a winter hibernating, writing and recording - back and forth between an Italian farmhouse, a deserted swiss train station, a seaside warehouse and a shipping crate under the Westway in London - ATLANTICS are due to record their debut album this October. The first single ' SONG FOR THE WINTER' is due out later this year.

Bipolar Empire

At Oxegen 2007, three young musicians from the Dublin suburb of Tallaght grouped together to create Biploar Empire. Later joined by Mark Maguire, 2010 saw them win an unsigned act competition and make a triumphant return to Oxegen. In October, their first single 'Tempomanic' was released, with their second single and title track from the album – 'Feel That You Own It' hitting stores on 1 April 2011. Bitches With Wolves

Bitches With Wolves command you to surrender to that primal instinct, take your shirt off, get loose and throw it down with animal abandon. Mainlining electro beats with a shot of pop sensibility, with lyrics that sing of sin, joy and heartache, the end result is one of cosmic, sonic escapism. Following a stellar year in 2010, Bitches With Wolves continue to galvanise a solid fan base following a slew of successful festival performances this summer that included Oxegen, Electric Picnic and Castlepalooza to name but a few. Their debut release is scheduled for release in the autumn.

Bressie

The Blizzards were one of Ireland's biggest rock 'n' roll deals, but that didn't stop their guitarist and singer Niall Breslin deciding in January 2010 that he needed a new challenge.

He has managed to combine both musical genres to glorious effect as can be heard on his debut solo single, 'Can’t Stay Young (Forever)'. A big-chorused synth-pop anthem that screams "Summer!"

Bressie's growing maturity as a songwriter is underlined by his lyrics which reflect on everything that's happened to him over the past decade of his life.

'Can't Stay Young (Forever)' is the first taster from an as-yet-untitled album that follows in the Summer.

Carl Barat

It began with the Libertines, the greatest rock and roll story of a generation. Their 2002 debut album ‘Up The Bracket’ captured countless hearts with a musical spirit we had been missing since Britpop . The 2010 Reading and Leeds Festivals witnessed the reunion of the band and provided them with a dignified closing. However, following the release of four albums with The Libertines and Dirty Pretty Things, Carl had a new focus. His self-titled album released in October 2010 is an album of unflinching honesty and beauty offering an insight into one of British modern rock’s most-loved and vital musicians.

Carly Connor

19 year old Carly Connor hails from Easterhouse in Glasgow.

Based in London for the last two years, Carly has worked hard at her songwriting craft as much as she has on her live performances and the amount of gigs already done across the UK & Europe is impressive.

Carly is a star in the making with a unique, powerful voice. Taking influence from Janis Joplin and early (Ike &) Tina Turner – Carly has the knack for writing heart felt lyrics for someone so early in her music career– her early years and upbringing in a tough part of Glasgow have certainly made a lifelong imprint in Carly’s emotional DNA – and that certainly comes through in her music.

Carly plays Arthur’s Day in Dublin on Thursday 22nd September, will tour Scotland & Ireland in December and is signed to ATLANTIC RECORDS – Carly’s debut album will be out in late Spring 2012.

Cashier NO 9

Is there a Belfast sound..? Van Morrison.. Stiff Little Fingers.. Divine Comedy.. Cashier No. 9 sound nothing like any of these, but they're as innovative and different as anything that's come from the city. They could be from California, or Manchester, or any number of places, having been variously compared with The Byrds, Beach Boys, Stone Roses, Pavement, CSN, The Flaming Lips and many others. Yet with their rich vocal harmonies, bold guitar textures and supremely catchy melodies, they've created a sound that's indeterminably none of these yet equally vibrant.

D.O.G.

The acronym D.O.G stands for Dogz Or Godz and was formed by long time friends Karl Gordon (AKA KGee) and Thomas Berhane 3 years ago. KGee had already established himself as a world class DJ and top flight producer/writer with production and remix credits for acts such as Jesse J, All saints, Jamie Cullum, and Rod Stewart, to name but a few. The idea was to form a band and record an album that had no restrictions or boundaries and to create a sound that went against the grain! This was certainly achieved and the debut album Retox was written recorded and produced by the boys at KGee's home studio in Kensal green with additional production from no other than Liam Howlett from the prodigy.

James Walsh

After almost a decade with his enormous yet somehow tender, fragile voice fronting Starsailor, James Walsh has emerged as a singer-songwriter in his own right.

After collaborating with songwriter/producer Sacha Skarbek (Duffy/Adele), James has found an unlikely new career path as a provider of songs for other people. But most importantly, this sense of rejuvenation has fired his own new music.

Soul On Trial is about a couple trying to escape their past, whilst the haunting Man On The Hill, carries a sublime world-weariness he could never have produced while seeing the planet through wide youthful eyes in the early days of Starsailor.

Older, wiser – and a father – he's looking forward to "doing something different for a while" and making what promises to be a very adventurous solo album.

He was accompanied by Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals. They quickly wrote and recorded four tracks, including the turbulent moody blues of Kingcrawler.

Over the succeeding months Kane would trade musical favours with Noel Gallagher, work with Dan The Automator in San Francisco to give his rhythm tracks a hip hop undertow.

Now, one year on, Kane has finished his glorious, fuzz-rock-raw, beat-pop-brilliant album.

Ryan has just completed another sold out Irish tour and has already confirmed for Oxegen. In addition to this he joins Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams on his Irish tour this summer.

Scissor Sisters

top

If pop has a responsibility to be music for all people, the Scissor Sisters have made that type of pop music experience their battle cry.

Entertainers at heart, their success has spilled out far past the New York club scene and into the global mainstream, earning a reputation for their humorous, controversial and outright transgressive live performances.

Despite becoming chart toppers and festival headliners throughout the world, the award winning Scissor Sisters have never turned away from the magic of their former downtown stomping grounds. Working in the great tradition of dance music, the band flips musical and aesthetic conventions on their head in favour of a belief that music will set you free. Behind the sweat, exuberant grooves and joyously unrestrained performances is an open invitation. Thankfully, we're all on the list.

Seasick Steve

After nearly half a century spent in obscurity, Seasick Steve -- with one electrifying performance on Jools Holland's Hootenanny, New Years Eve 2007 -- burst on to the UK scene.

Four years and four Jools Holland shows later, plus guest spots on Jonathan Ross, Top Gear, and many more; performances at nearly every major UK festival, including 3 barnstorming main stage Glastonbury appearances, and rocking shows at V Festival, Reading & Leeds, Hard Rock Calling, Latitude Festival, and major European festivals like Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop; plus over one million records sold; all serve to firmly establish Seasick Steve as a real star.

Seasick Steve has sold out such venues as London's historic Royal Albert Hall, the Hammersmith Apollo, Brixton O2 Academy, and many more.

There are no fancy frills in his records, no light shows on stage, no backing tapes, no auto-tune, no whistles OR bells... just some get-down, go-for-it, foot-stomping, real... live... music.

Despite only being signed three months ago, Sunday Girl's sounds are spreading by word-of-mouth, with the Observer and Popjustice already firm fans. The first official single will be the dreamy electronica of Stop, Hey.

Beautiful, thoughtful and credible, Sunday Girl is offering a whole new creative sensibility to the world of music. A true individual, this Sunday clearly has no plans to rest just yet…

The Antics

The Antics are four young Leamington lads that have been tipped for major league greatness. Fresh from supporting White Lies at their pre T in The Park party the band have just been confirmed as the main support for The Enemy's forthcoming UK and European.

In fact it was The Enemy's Tom Clarke who personally asked them to join them on their forthcoming tour saying, 'They're like the best bits of The Cult and The Cure bought bang up to date with enormous choruses and spine tingling guitars that feel like they've fallen out of the future. Solid beats and intelligent lyrics complete the outfit that are set to smash radio wide open and take over music.'

When not hanging out at The Exchange in Leamington they'll be toiling away in the studio working on new material for their forthcoming album.

The Enemy

Already mutual friends beforehand, The Enemy became genuine music allies in February of 2006. Andy Hopkins brought along his bass and boyish good looks, Liam Watts added a fearsome drumming prowess and Tom Clarke provided all the swagger and sneer you would expect from someone who has to sing and play guitar at the same time. The Feeling

The Feeling - who have sold over two million records in the UK and established themselves as one of the UK's foremost purveyors of exquisite pop music - make a very welcome return with the release of their new album, ‘Together We Were Made’.

With many inspirations such as Wings, ELO, Elton John and 10cc, The Feeling are a band right at the top of their game and they have had an amazing journey to get there. Between 2005 and 2008 The Feeling had 10 days off with the relentless touring, but it was something they all enjoyed thoroughly. In 2010 they returned to the Alps to launch their own “Little World Festival” and in October they took the songs to Island Records who have released Together We Were Made. And what songs they are. This is a Feeling record that sounds, unashamedly, like The Feeling, but with a host of new twists and turns to explore.

The Hot Sprockets

THE HOT SPROCKETS debut album “HONEY SKIPPIN’” was released on May 6th 2010 on independent label Cherrypopper Records. The album kicks off with the mighty ‘Cruizin’ and from beginning to the end, there is no let up in the charm or swagger of the Hot Sprockets. Their kind of rock’n’roll music is haunted by the ghost of country and blues – take the good-time revolutionary spirit of MC5, simmer it down to the sounds of Crosby Stills Nash and Young, add some rough-edged Eagles of Death Metal – wailing harmonicas, twangy vocals, jangly slide guitars and you are somewhere near the delta rock sonic nugget that is Hot Sprockets’ sound.

A phenomenal live band the past two years have seen these smart blues-rockers play over 200 gigs including support slots with The Zutons, The View, Ida Maria, BP Fallon, Peter Hook, Republic of Loose and a rake of festivals including Electric Picnic, Indie-Pendence, Castlepalooza, Sea Sessions, Vantastival.

Their third, "The Even Keel EP" is a bold statement of progress, capturing the energy of their spectacular live performances. Windings

The windings story started in 2005, when Steve Ryan released the self titled debut album on Out On A Limb Records, to a multitude of positive reviews from music media and fans alike and invitations to perform at many festivals including Electric Picnic. Three years later, long time collaborator and friend Liam Marley became a fully fledged member of the band, bringing his dynamic multi-instrumentalism and song-writing skills to the table. Liam's influence was instantaneous and the windings sound began to evolve, just as Steve had hoped it would. 2009 saw the arrival of a further three winders - Aaron Mulhall taking on drum duties, and Patrick O' Brien and Mike Gavin on guitars/keyboards/glockenspiels/kitchen sinks.

Wretch 32

Everybody's talking about 26 year old Jermaine Scott, aka Wretch 32. Chipmunk, The Streets and Wiley were among the first to ask him to record with them, while Ian Brown gave him the green light to use a sample from the Stone Roses' Fools Gold for his chart topping single 'Unorthodox', a collaboration with fellow London rapper Example, who has compared Wretch's 'charismatic, effortless flow' with that of Jay Z.

This summer sees Wretch 32 gearing up for the release of his much anticipated debut album 'Black and White'. Packed with quirky and humorous narratives and innovative and poetic metaphors, 'Black and White' confirms Wretch's status as the MC'S MC, positioning him as potentially the most interesting lyricist this country has produced since Mike Skinner.

Wolf Gang

Looking at his background, it is not surprising that at only 24 Max McElligott has made an album with one of America’s best producers, Dave Fridmann, nor that he has done it under the guise of Wolf Gang. Growing up in Hull, Michigan and St Andrews, his childhood involved joining a local pipe band in Scotland and watching his violinist mother play with a full orchestra. Inspired by these musicians he is now proficient on guitar, bass, piano and keyboards, glockenspiel and the drums. After dropping out of LSE and undertaking some not-so glamorous day jobs, he has made an ornate pop album of near-symphonic grandeur named after a utopian place that came to him in a dream. Suego Faults is a magnificent collection of accessible, experimental pop.
